Osteoporosis: Defined


Osteoporosis is a disease of the bone. It usually develops at an older age, but it may develop in young teens.  It is characterized by bone loss that results in weakened bones that are subject to fractures.

Two Types: primary and secondary.
  •  Primary: Age related bone loss,
  • Secondary: Cause may be unknown (idiopathic), used for those under the age of 70.

Juvenile Osteoporosis:

Juvenile Osteoporosis develops between the ages of 8 and 14, usually along with growth spurts.

Who gets it?
  • Both Men and Women may be diagnosed with Osteoporosis but it is most common in older women.
  • Small, thin women are at greater risk; as are White and Asian women. 
  • Black and Hispanic women have a lower risk but they can . 
  • Osteoporosis tends to run in families.
